Solar Electrical Protection Guide

Understand the protective devices commonly used on the DC and AC sides of a solar PV installation.

Solar PV systems combine high DC voltages, outdoor cabling, inverters and AC grid connections. A coordinated protection design improves safety, equipment reliability and maintenance.

Typical DC-side protection

  • String fuses: Protect strings from reverse current where parallel strings can feed a fault.
  • DC circuit breakers: Provide overload/short-circuit protection and isolation when correctly rated.
  • DC isolators: Allow safe maintenance disconnection.
  • DC SPDs: Limit transient overvoltage on PV conductors.

Typical AC-side protection

  • AC MCB or MCCB sized for inverter output.
  • RCD/RCCB/RCBO protection where required by the inverter and local rules.
  • AC SPD at the inverter output or distribution board.
  • Appropriate main isolation and earthing.

Key design checks

CheckWhy it matters
Maximum PV open-circuit voltageDetermines DC device voltage rating
String short-circuit currentSupports cable, fuse and breaker sizing
Inverter output currentDetermines AC protection rating
Earthing arrangementAffects SPD and residual-current protection
Lightning exposureInfluences SPD type and coordination

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using AC-only breakers on DC circuits.
  • Ignoring cold-temperature voltage rise.
  • Installing SPDs with long, looped conductors.
  • Using underrated isolators or connectors.
  • Mixing incompatible MC4-type connectors.
Professional design: Solar protection must be based on inverter specifications, array design and applicable standards. Use a qualified solar engineer or installer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both DC and AC SPDs?

Many PV systems benefit from both, depending on cable routes, building lightning protection and risk assessment.

Can a standard MCB isolate solar DC?

Only if it has an explicit DC voltage and breaking-capacity rating suitable for the array.
